The contemporary dance: all to know on this art

Since the dawn of time, dance has occupied a prominent place in the art world, it has not ceased to evolve and develop over time.

Classical dance or ballet was the reference of all dance, in the 20’s, modern dance appeared to get out of the rigid framework of classical dance.

As for contemporary dance, it appeared after the Second World War.

Therefore, what is contemporary dance, what is its specificity and what are its different types.

1 – Contemporary dance: its definition :

The contemporary dance is defined as being a current dance, which belongs to the present time; it is inspired and fed by various artistic currents.

2 – Contemporary dance: its specificities

Contemporary dance differs from other types of dance by the mobility of the bust, the fluidity and the techniques used on the floor.

Contemporary dance offers a great deal of freedom and expression, and can even introduce other arts and techniques to bring out the rigid character of classical dance.

It is a plural art; there is not only one type of contemporary dance but also many variations

3 – Contemporary dance; its different types

There are many types of contemporary dances; we will mention the most emblematic of contemporary dances :

Japanese contemporary dance:

BUTO is a Japanese contemporary dance created in the 60s, its name means “Dancing & Tapping on the ground”. This dance is characterized by its slow pace and its naked performers, their naked bodies painted white.

African contemporary dance:

This style developed from the late 90s, it represents a liberation, decolonization and shows the attachment to the African continent.

Contemporary dance with an object:

This style of dance introduces different objects; the dancers use in the choreography several accessories such as a table, a chair, a ribbon, a stick or others.

Contemporary dance with a balloon:  

The balloon has always been used as an accessory in dance; it brings an imaginary side to the choreography.
